Dr Jay Wiper, FRACS (Plast)
Dr Jay Wiper is the Director of the Plastic Surgery Unit and Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon in the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane with a specialist interest in all types of skin cancer & general plastic surgery. He undertakes a wide range of complex microsurgical reconstructive procedures for both Head & Neck cancer and complex trauma. He is the lead for the award winning Skin Lesion & Assessment Management (SLAM) service.
Dr Wiper graduated medicine from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom in 2001. He was first appointed as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in 2013. He lead the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery service for one of the largest Major Trauma Centres (MTC) in the United Kingdom, and was an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Dr Wiper has completed two microsurgical fellowships including a Head & Neck Fellowships and holds full board specialist qualifications for Plastic Surgery in both the United Kingdom and Australia. He is a member of Australian Plastic Surgery Society (ASPS) and British Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons (BAPRAS).
Dr Wiper is a board member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). He is frequently invited to lecture and teach in reconstructive techniques both nationally and internationally and is actively involved in teaching Surgical Registrars. He is patient centered professional and aims to deliver high quality, timely care.
Dr Michael Wagels, FRACS (Plast)
Dr Michael is a Staff Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Queensland Children’s Hospital and Redlands Hospital. He undertook surgical training in Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth and was awarded FRACS in plastic and reconstructive surgery in 2012. Michael interrupted training to undertake research and was awarded a PhD from the University of Queensland in 2013. His Research Higher Degree thesis evaluated the behaviour of auto-transplanted muscle to prevent late failures from re-exploration. He also completed a fellowship in hand surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in 2013-14.
Since returning to Brisbane from his Fellowship, he was granted a conjoined Academic appointment at the University of Queensland with the title of Senior Lecturer. His clinical interests include re-animation of the upper limb in tetraplegia and brachial plexus injuries, surgery of the hand and wrist, complex lower limb reconstruction, craniofacial reconstruction and the management of complex cutaneous malignancies including melanoma.
Michael founded the Skin Lesion Assessment and Management model of care, which provides same day assessment and surgical management of skin lesions across multiple Health Services in Queensland Health. He also founded the Australian Centre for Complex Integrated Surgical Solutions and is the Clinical Director of the Herston Biofabrication Institute. These were the first public health entities to provide Point of Care Medical Device manufacturing and biofabrication themed research in Australia. Michael has been principal research supervisor for twelve candidates who have successfully completed postgraduate research higher degrees and over 40 minor research projects.
